Types of Facial Injuries

During a car crash, occupants may strike their face or head on the interior of a car, this might be the steering wheel, back of a front seat, or a window.

In Illinois, more than 83,000 people suffered an injury during a car accident in 2012, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT). The Illinois DOT classifies an accident injury as incapacitating and non-incapacitating; although facial trauma may not limit the victim’s ability to drive or walk, it could impede on their ability to perform the day-to-day activities they performed before the accident.

Some common types of facial injuries include:

  • Cuts
  • Bruising
  • Broken bones (occipital, nasal, etc.)
  • Dislocation of the jaw
  • Corneal abrasions
  • Airbag burns
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Disfigurement

In 2009, a study on facial injuries by a doctor at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee revealed that between 1993 and 2005, more than 167,300 automobile occupants sustained at least one facial fracture during a motor vehicle accident. Most frequently victims reported suffering nasal fractures.

Additionally, the study revealed that over time facial fractures declined, but people were more likely to suffer a facial injury if the crash involved a side impact.
