JUUL E-Cigarette Lawsuits
Trust Our Dedicated, Compassionate Charleston, IL Attorneys
When e-cigarettes first hit the market, consumers were led to believe they were a safer, healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes. Unfortunately, we’ve since learned that e-cigarettes, or “vape pens”, are anything but innocuous. In fact, in many ways, e-cigs are far more dangerous than their predecessors. E-cigarettes have been linked to stunted brain development, heavy nicotine addiction, neurological problems, behavioral issues, and worse. One of the most popular e-cigarette brands, JUUL, has received extra attention because their cartridges, or “JUUL pods” contain an enormous amount of nicotine, and the company has been accused of intentionally marketing to teenagers.
The increased popularity of these dangerous products has led to serious health complications, especially in teens and young adults. Several individuals and families have filed lawsuits against the big e-cigarette companies for concealing the serious health risks associated with their products and for knowingly marketing to young demographics. If you or someone you love was harmed by the ill effects of e-cigarettes, make sure you know your legal options.

The Dangers of E-Cigs
E-cigarettes closely resemble USB/thumb drives and are typically small and rectangular. Most e-cigs can fit inside your pocket and they rely on cartridges or “pods” to generate vapors. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which use tobacco, e-cigs rely on pods filled with nicotine and other chemicals. Although they’re generally tobacco-free, they often contain significantly more nicotine than traditional cigarettes. In fact, according to JUUL, one of their pods contains as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes, which makes vaping extremely addictive.
Unfortunately, the chemical ingredients in e-cigarette cartridges are largely untested, which means we don’t yet know the potential health effects that come with ingesting or inhaling these ingredients. What we do know, however, isn’t positive.
Vaping can lead to the following health problems:
- Behavioral changes
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased risk of blood clots
- Increased risk of diabetes
- Increased risk of stroke
- Issues with brain development
- Nicotine addiction
- Peptic ulcers
- Respiratory illnesses
JUUL Targets Teens in Marketing Campaigns
Recent generations have steered clear of tobacco products, thanks to several educational campaigns, but the rise in popularity of e-cigs in the past few years brought with it a wave of new, young smokers. Worse still, e-cigarette companies, like JUUL, have maximized on this cultural change by specifically targeting teenagers and young adults in their marketing campaigns. JUUL launched a targeted advertising strategy that relied on social media marketing, where they were most likely to reach teens and young adults. On top of that, JUUL’s print and video advertisements featured young people vaping, encouraging those of a similar age group to take part.
Perhaps worse than the targeted marketing strategies that single out teenage users is JUUL’s creation and sale of flavored pods designed to entice young vapers. These pods come in sweet, fruity flavors that appeal to child-like tastes, making it that much easier for younger consumers to become hooked to these deadly devices. In fact, the problem with flavored cartridges has become so pervasive that the federal government is making plans to ban all flavored e-cigarettes by 2020.
